About Us

Company Overview
Founded in 1993, Sensable is a leading developer of 3D touch-enabled (force feedback) solutions and technology that allow users to not only see and hear an on-screen computer application, but to actually 'feel' it.  The company evolved from undergraduate research done at MIT in the 1990s by industry pioneers Thomas Massie and Dr. Kenneth Salisbury. With 44 patents granted and over 9,000 systems installed worldwide, Sensable's haptic technology is being used in applications ranging from surgical simulation and stroke rehabilitation, to dental restorations, to designing toys and footwear; as well as a range of research and robotic applications.  The company markets its own 3D modeling solutions as well as its haptic devices and developer toolkits to medical, dental, design, and manufacturing companies; educational and research institutions; and OEMs.  Additional information can be found at www.Sensable.com.

In 2006, the company created the Sensable Dental division, focused on delivering integrated digital solutions for the dental industry.  Additional information on the company's dental offerings can be found at www.Sensabledental.com.

Market Drivers
As haptics comes of age, Sensable's expanded market presence is being driven by simultaneous trends of:

  • Manufacturers seeking to shorten time to market through haptically-enabled product design and manufacturing processes;
  • The commercialization of medical and dental products incorporating haptics, such as surgical planning, simulation and training, and 3D modeling for patient-specific implants and prosthetics;
  • University research centers and projects that incorporate haptic feedback into an increasingly broad range of applications.

Sensable Products

  • FreeForm® Modeling Systems are 3D touch-enabled systems used for medical and dental modeling, product design, digital content creation and fine art.  FreeForm Modeling provides all of the benefits of computer aided design (CAD) with an intuitive interface for an artist used to modeling in clay or wax.  Unlike traditional CAD, it is especially well-suited to create organic shapes such as those found in the human body, toys and footwear.
  • The Intellifit™ Digital Restoration System is an integrated soluton for scanning, 3D modeling and design, and 3D fabrication, used to create dental restorations such as partial frameworks and crown and bridge substructures.  This solution includes a Scan/Design configuration, as well as the complete Intellifit Production Center configuration.
  • PHANTOM® Haptic Devices deliver force feedback and true 3D navigation, and offer a wide range of virtual workspaces.
  • OpenHaptics® is a software development toolkit used for developing haptic applications.
